Job Overview

The Lead Pathologist will oversee diagnostic pathology services within the Diagnostics Services department at the African Medical Centre of Excellence in Abuja. The role is responsible for supporting accurate and timely diagnoses through the evaluation of tissue samples, blood and other bodily fluids while maintaining high standards of quality assurance, patient safety and regulatory compliance.

Responsibilities

• Oversee all diagnostic pathology services within the Diagnostics Services department.
• Evaluate laboratory specimens, including tissue samples, blood and other bodily fluids, to support accurate diagnosis.
• Collaborate with oncologists, surgeons, general physicians and multidisciplinary medical teams to support comprehensive patient diagnosis and care.
• Establish and maintain high standards for laboratory practice, regulatory compliance and accreditation requirements.
• Supervise pathologists, laboratory clinicians and laboratory staff, ensuring adherence to organizational standards.
• Conduct performance evaluations for direct reports, provide constructive feedback and identify professional development opportunities.
• Mentor junior pathologists and implement programmes that support their clinical training and career growth.
• Lead the development and implementation of strategic plans for the Diagnostics Services department.
• Work with leadership to define departmental goals aligned with the organization’s mission and vision.
• Prepare and monitor the department’s budget, manage expenditure and participate in resource allocation.
• Participate in the procurement of laboratory equipment and technology.
• Develop new diagnostic protocols and methodologies to improve service delivery.
• Evaluate emerging technologies and techniques that may enhance diagnostic capabilities.
• Lead and participate in research activities focused on innovation in diagnostic pathology.
• Implement quality assurance measures and monitor diagnostic outcomes for continuous improvement.
• Manage relationships with external laboratories to ensure diagnostic support when required.
• Maintain open communication with laboratory personnel to support workflow and problem-solving.
• Engage in organizational initiatives focused on patient care and operational efficiency.
• Support the integration of pathology services within the wider healthcare delivery system, prioritizing patient safety and satisfaction.

Requirements and Qualifications

Essential qualifications

• Medical degree, MBBS or equivalent.
• Board certification in pathology.
• Valid medical licence to practise in Nigeria.
• Minimum of seven years in diagnostic pathology.
• Significant exposure to pathology subspecialties.
• Histopathology, cytopathology and molecular-pathology expertise.
• Knowledge of laboratory quality-management systems.
• Proficiency with diagnostic technologies and laboratory information systems.
• Written and spoken English suitable for medical communication.
• Evidence of an ongoing commitment to continuing professional development.
• Exceptional analytical skills supporting accurate and timely pathology diagnosis.

Desirable qualifications

• FRCPath, ACLPS or equivalent postgraduate pathology training.
• Another relevant professional qualification.
• Proficiency in languages other than English is desirable.
• Ability to adapt to a new country and cultural environment where applicable.
