Sigma Consult is recruiting a Consultant Cardiologist on behalf of a healthcare client in Victoria Island, Lagos. The position is based within a modern tertiary healthcare environment and involves specialist care for patients with cardiovascular conditions.

The successful physician will provide consultations, diagnosis and treatment, manage complex and emergency cardiac cases, support multidisciplinary care and contribute to clinical quality and professional development within the cardiology service.

What the role involves

The Consultant Cardiologist will be responsible for specialist cardiovascular care across outpatient, inpatient and emergency settings.

Key duties include:

• Providing specialist consultations and comprehensive management for cardiovascular conditions such as hypertension, heart failure, coronary artery disease, arrhythmias, valvular heart disease and cardiomyopathies.
• Conducting outpatient consultations, follow-up clinics and inpatient reviews.
• Developing evidence-based treatment and management plans.
• Assessing cardiovascular risk and providing preventive-care advice and patient counselling.
• Managing complex cardiac cases in collaboration with other specialists.
• Participating in cardiology ward rounds and specialist clinics.
• Providing appropriate follow-up for patients who require cardiac interventions.

Diagnostic and cardiac procedures

The role includes the use and interpretation of relevant cardiovascular investigations, including:

• ECG
• Echocardiography
• Holter monitoring
• Exercise stress testing
• Ambulatory blood pressure monitoring
• Cardiac risk and functional assessments

The successful candidate will also support cardiac imaging interpretation and clinical decision-making.

Where applicable, the position may involve participation in cardiac catheterisation, coronary angiography and other specialist procedures. Experience with interventional cardiology or related procedures will be an advantage.

Emergency cardiovascular care

The Consultant Cardiologist will also provide specialist support when patients present with acute or life-threatening cardiovascular conditions.

Responsibilities include:

• Managing acute coronary syndromes.
• Treating acute heart failure.
• Managing serious cardiac arrhythmias.
• Responding to hypertensive emergencies.
• Supporting cardiac arrest management and resuscitation.
• Participating in emergency and on-call arrangements.
• Working closely with emergency medicine and critical-care teams when managing unstable patients.

Experience in handling complex or rapidly changing clinical situations will therefore be important.

Working with the wider clinical team

Cardiac care often requires coordination between several medical disciplines. The successful candidate will work with physicians, surgeons, intensivists, radiologists, nurses and other healthcare professionals.

The role includes:

• Participating in multidisciplinary case reviews.
• Contributing specialist input to complex patient cases.
• Supporting coordinated treatment planning.
• Working with other hospital units when specialist cardiology input is required.

Clinical leadership and mentorship

This is also a senior clinical position with responsibilities beyond direct patient care.

The Consultant Cardiologist will be expected to:

• Provide clinical supervision and mentorship to Medical Officers, Residents, House Officers and relevant nursing staff.
• Contribute to clinical protocols and treatment pathways.
• Support the development of cardiology services.
• Participate in morbidity and mortality reviews.
• Attend clinical meetings and continuing medical education activities.
• Contribute to quality-improvement initiatives within the Cardiology Unit.

Clinical governance and patient records

High standards of documentation, confidentiality and professional conduct will be essential.

The successful candidate will:

• Maintain accurate and timely patient records.
• Follow applicable Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria requirements.
• Comply with hospital policies and clinical governance standards.
• Participate in clinical audits and quality-assurance activities.
• Support outcome monitoring and service improvement.
• Maintain patient confidentiality and professional ethics.

Qualifications and professional registration

Applicants should have:

• MBBS or an equivalent medical qualification from a recognised institution.
• A recognised Fellowship in Cardiology, such as FWACP from the West African College of Physicians, FMCP from the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria, or an equivalent recognised qualification.
• Full registration with the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN).
• A valid MDCN practising licence.
• Additional international professional certifications or professional memberships will be an advantage.

Experience required

Candidates should have a minimum of 5 years of post-fellowship experience in Consultant Cardiology practice.

The employer is particularly interested in candidates with:

• Broad experience managing cardiovascular conditions.
• Strong inpatient and outpatient cardiology experience.
• Experience working in a tertiary, specialist or teaching hospital.
• Experience managing complex cardiac cases.
• Exposure to interventional cardiology, cardiac catheterisation or related procedures as an advantage.
