Save the Children is seeking a Driver to join its Supply Chain team in Yobe, Nigeria. The successful candidate will drive Save the Children vehicles to transport people, goods and documents safely and efficiently, while maintaining vehicles and related records in line with organisational policies, procedures and national traffic regulations.

The role may also support the emergency team during humanitarian crises. It reports to the Fleet Officer and has no staff reporting to it. The post holder will have frequent or intensive contact with children and/or young people through work in country programmes or visits to programme locations.

Responsibilities

• Drive Save the Children vehicles to collect and deliver people, documents and goods safely and on time, in line with organisational policies and guidelines.
• Maintain assigned vehicles in a clean and sound mechanical condition and ensure their safety.
• Check oil, water, fan belt tension, brake fluid and other levels before trips, and recommend vehicle servicing to management when required.
• Maintain up-to-date mileage log sheets and submit them monthly to the supervisor.
• Submit monthly vehicle log sheets and vehicle pro-fleet reports in Excel.
• Ensure road licences and vehicle insurance remain valid and are renewed on time.
• Keep vehicle tools and accessories, including the spare wheel, jack, wheel spanner, first aid kit and fire extinguisher, in the vehicle and in good order.
• Report vehicle damage or defects to the supervisor or Fleet Assistant as soon as possible.
• Assist staff and visitors and help troubleshoot potential problems during daily operations.
• Follow travel instructions and comply with applicable traffic laws and regulations.
• Advise on possible breaches of traffic regulations or laws when necessary.
• Maintain professional and personal conduct that reflects positively on Save the Children and supports its humanitarian mission.
• Safely and accurately file and store information collected from field sites as part of case management responses for children harmed or at risk of harm.
• Carry out additional duties within the reasonable scope of the role holder’s skills and experience.

Requirements and Qualifications

• Minimum Diploma or equivalent.
• Valid driving licence, with Classes B, C and D held for at least three years.
• At least three years of relevant experience.
• Ability to read and write in English.
• Good interpersonal and communication skills.
• Knowledge of routes, duty stations and project areas in the NGO and diplomatic community.
• Ability to travel to the field from time to time.
• Willingness and capacity to remain flexible and accommodating in difficult and frustrating working conditions.
• Commitment to Save the Children’s Child Protection Policy.
• Understanding of refugee dynamics.
• Ability to work flexibly as part of a team.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
• Excellent English and Hausa language skills.
• Excellent IT literacy, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, email systems and internet browsing.

The role holder must adhere to Save the Children’s Child Protection Code of Conduct, Security Guidelines, Chronic Illness Policy and ethical principles. The position also requires compliance with Save the Children health and safety policies and procedures. Save the Children’s selection process includes rigorous background checks to support the protection of children from abuse.
