Role Summary
The Consultant Migration Health Nurse will provide professional nursing support within IOMโs Migration Health Assessment Clinic (MHAC) in Lagos.
The role involves conducting health assessments required for migration processes, supporting medical examinations, assisting with disease prevention activities, providing health information to migrants and refugees, and ensuring accurate documentation throughout the assessment process.
The nurse will work closely with medical teams, laboratories, partner organizations, and other IOM departments to ensure migrants receive appropriate care and follow-up support.
Key Responsibilities
Migration Health Assessments and Clinical Support
The successful candidate will:
- Perform daily nursing activities within the Migration Health Assessment Clinic.
- Support medical examinations required for migration and resettlement processes.
- Record vital signs, including blood pressure, weight, height, and visual assessments.
- Collect blood, urine, sputum, and other required samples.
- Support laboratory testing, imaging procedures, and vaccination activities.
- Assist with tuberculosis management, treatment referrals, and follow-up care.
- Support pre-departure health procedures and medical movement preparations.
Patient Communication and Counselling
Responsibilities include:
- Providing migrants and refugees with clear information about the health assessment process.
- Explaining medical procedures, treatments, and referral requirements.
- Offering counselling related to tuberculosis, HIV prevention, and other health concerns where appropriate.
- Maintaining a respectful and professional approach when interacting with patients from diverse backgrounds.
Documentation and Health Information Management
The nurse will:
- Conduct detailed health histories and collect accurate biodata.
- Verify patient identification throughout the assessment process.
- Maintain records of individuals undergoing health examinations and investigations.
- Ensure medical documents and information are properly completed and transmitted.
- Prepare administrative reports and programme updates when required.
Clinic Operations and Safety Standards
The role requires:
- Following IOM Health Assessment Programme guidelines, checklists, and standard operating procedures.
- Maintaining infection prevention and universal precaution standards.
- Ensuring medical samples are properly handled and transported.
- Monitoring medical supplies, pharmacy items, kits, and emergency equipment.
- Supporting mobile health missions when required.
Medical Escort and Partnership Support
The Consultant Migration Health Nurse may also:
- Provide medical escort services when assigned.
- Support migrants throughout different stages of travel when continued medical care is required.
- Coordinate with healthcare providers, embassies, UN agencies, NGOs, and IOM teams.
- Share relevant health information with authorized partners.
Qualifications and Experience
Applicants should have:
Education Requirements
- Bachelorโs degree or Diploma in Nursing from an accredited institution.
- A valid nursing license to practice in Nigeria.
Professional Experience
Candidates should demonstrate:
- Minimum of three years of relevant clinical experience for Bachelorโs degree holders.
- Minimum of five years of relevant clinical experience for Diploma holders.
- Strong nursing skills, including experience with clinical procedures such as phlebotomy.
- Knowledge of patient care, preventive healthcare, and disease control principles.
- Experience in infection prevention and patient safety practices.
Additional experience in the following areas is an advantage:
- Tuberculosis management.
