Role Overview
The Cyclotron Technician will be responsible for the daily operation, monitoring, maintenance, and optimization of medical cyclotron equipment used for isotope production.
Working closely with medical physicists, radiochemists, radiopharmacists, biomedical engineers, and nuclear medicine professionals, the successful candidate will help maintain reliable production processes that support diagnostic imaging and patient treatment.
The role also requires strict compliance with radiation safety procedures, equipment maintenance schedules, and quality management standards.
Key Responsibilities
Cyclotron Operations and Isotope Production
The successful candidate will:
- Operate medical cyclotrons following approved operational procedures.
- Support the safe and efficient production of medical isotopes.
- Monitor equipment performance and report technical issues promptly.
- Assist with isotope target loading, unloading, and transfer to radiochemistry laboratories.
- Maintain accurate production records in accordance with Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) requirements.
Equipment Maintenance and Technical Support
Responsibilities include:
- Performing routine inspections and preventive maintenance on cyclotron systems.
- Maintaining chemistry modules, hot cells, manipulator arms, and supporting equipment.
- Assisting engineers during troubleshooting and repair activities.
- Supporting maintenance involving electrical, mechanical, vacuum, cooling, and high-voltage systems.
- Following manufacturer recommendations and departmental maintenance procedures.
Radiation Safety and Regulatory Compliance
The role involves:
- Following radiation protection procedures and ALARA (As Low As Reasonably Achievable) principles.
- Using radiation monitoring instruments and personal dosimetry equipment.
- Complying with regulations established by the Nigerian Nuclear Regulatory Authority (NNRA).
- Supporting compliance with cGMP requirements, environmental health and safety standards, transportation regulations, and internal operating procedures.
Documentation and Reporting
The successful applicant will:
- Complete maintenance logs and production documentation accurately.
- Prepare regulatory records and operational reports.
- Submit maintenance history, work records, and required documentation on schedule.
- Support regulatory inspections, internal audits, and quality reviews.
Teamwork and Collaboration
The position also includes:
- Working closely with physicists, radiopharmacists, engineers, and nuclear medicine specialists.
- Supporting senior technical staff during maintenance and repair work.
- Participating in departmental meetings and continuous improvement initiatives.
Professional Development
The Cyclotron Technician will:

Qualifications
Applicants should possess:
- A Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering Technology, Electrical Engineering Technology, Mechanical Engineering Technology, Mechatronics Engineering Technology, or a related technical discipline.

- Additional certification in radiation safety or cyclotron operations is desirable.
Experience Requirements

- At least two years of experience as a Cyclotron Technician or in a closely related technical role.

- Experience working with electrical, mechanical, digital, and analogue systems.
- Ability to troubleshoot high-voltage systems, vacuum technology, radiofrequency systems, and industrial cooling systems.
