The Consultant Internal Medicine Physician will provide comprehensive healthcare to adult patients within the General Medical and Surgical Services department at the African Medical Centre of Excellence, Abuja. The African Medical Centre of Excellence, Abuja is a multi-specialty medical institution developed by Afreximbank in partnership with King’s College Hospital London. The partnership is intended to provide global expertise, clinical training, research and professional development.
The Centre will provide services in oncology, haematology, cardiovascular care and general healthcare across the continent, with plans for expansion. Its development includes a phased rollout over six years towards a 500-bed facility. The Centre aims to provide advanced procedures and treatments, counter medical brain drain, reduce medical tourism, support employment and contribute to a healthier and more educated future for Africa.
Responsibilities
- Conduct comprehensive patient assessments through detailed medical histories and physical examinations.
- Diagnose and manage acute and chronic illnesses, including complex cases involving multiple comorbidities.
- Develop and implement individualised treatment plans based on clinical guidelines and patient preferences.
- Order and interpret blood tests, imaging studies and other relevant diagnostic evaluations.
- Prescribe medications, monitor their effects and adjust treatment regimens when necessary.
- Provide preventive care, including immunisations and health screenings.
- Educate patients about their conditions, treatment options, health management and lifestyle modifications.
- Collaborate with specialists, nurses, allied health professionals and other members of multidisciplinary care teams.
- Maintain accurate and current medical records in accordance with legal and ethical standards.
- Participate in quality improvement, quality assurance, patient safety and risk management initiatives.
- Contribute to clinical protocols, guidelines, strategic planning, departmental committees and organisational workgroups.
- Engage in research and clinical trials as appropriate.
- Participate in community health initiatives, outreach and education focused on health awareness and disease prevention.
- Uphold the organisation’s mission and values, comply with relevant laws and regulations, and advocate for patient-centred care.
- Act as lead for Equality and Diversity in the department, supporting the development and implementation of related strategies, policies, procedures and monitoring systems.
- Supervise and mentor junior medical staff, including residents and interns, conduct performance evaluations, facilitate training and development, and address performance issues where necessary.
- Participate in recruitment and selection, succession planning and the development of high-potential employees.
- Work with HR and the Recruitment Manager on staff recruitment, retention, performance management and connections with local, international and online talent communities.
The role involves working with patients and families, medical and nursing staff, specialists, allied health professionals, administrative and support staff, community health organisations, regulatory bodies, professional associations, academic institutions, health authorities and peer physicians.
Requirements and Qualifications
Applicants should hold a medical degree from an accredited institution, have completed a residency in internal medicine, and hold fellowship certification in internal medicine that is registrable on the specialist register with the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria. A valid medical licence to practise in Nigeria is required.
