International Facilities Services Limited (IFS) is seeking a Lift Operator to support the safe and reliable operation of vertical transportation equipment at a client facility in Gbagada, Lagos.

The role covers the daily operation and monitoring of passenger lifts, dumbwaiter or service elevators and stage/theatrical elevators. It also involves basic mechanical and electrical fault-finding, equipment checks, maintenance records and first-line response when faults or emergencies occur.

Because lift operation directly affects passenger safety, the successful candidate must be comfortable following established procedures, escalating serious faults promptly and working closely with specialist maintenance personnel.

What the role involves

The Lift Operator will be responsible for the day-to-day operation and monitoring of the site’s lift systems.

Key responsibilities include:

• Operating passenger lifts, dumbwaiter/service elevators and stage or theatrical elevators during normal operations and events.
• Carrying out daily visual and functional checks on lift doors, call buttons, cabins and emergency systems.
• Checking emergency alarms and intercoms as part of routine inspections.
• Observing relevant areas such as lift pits and machine rooms and reporting defects or unusual conditions.
• Responding to lift faults, breakdowns and passenger entrapments in accordance with established emergency procedures.
• Escalating serious faults promptly to the Chief Engineer and specialist lift maintenance contractor.
• Carrying out basic mechanical and electrical fault-finding within the limits of your training and competence.
• Identifying issues such as door-sensor problems, control-panel faults and minor electrical connection issues.
• Safely isolating equipment when required and following approved procedures.
• Supporting the specialist lift maintenance subcontractor during scheduled preventive maintenance, repairs and compliance inspections.
• Coordinating access for maintenance contractors and observing work where required.
• Operating stage elevators during productions and events while following the required safety procedures.
• Maintaining accurate records of lift usage, faults and callouts through the facility’s CMMS or CAFM system.
• Checking that lift compliance certificates and required safety notices are current and properly displayed.
• Reporting any compliance gaps or expired documentation immediately.
• Responding to lift-related emergency callouts, including outside normal working hours where required.
• Liaising with the Chief Engineer regarding defects, spare-parts requirements and equipment that remains out of service.

Safety is a central part of the job

Working with lift equipment requires strict attention to safety procedures. The successful candidate will be expected to follow safe isolation, lock-out/tag-out (LOTO) and permit-to-work requirements at all times.

Safety interlocks and arrestor devices must never be bypassed.

Candidates should also understand the purpose of important lift safety systems, including overspeed governors, safety gears, emergency stops and fire-service operation.

The ability to remain calm and methodical during a breakdown or passenger entrapment will be particularly important.

Qualifications and experience

Applicants should have:

• OND or HND, or a Trade Certificate in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering or a related technical discipline.
• 2–4 years of hands-on experience operating or supporting the maintenance of passenger lifts or similar vertical transportation equipment.
• Experience in a commercial, institutional or comparable operating environment.
• Working knowledge of lift control panels and door systems.
• Basic mechanical and electrical fault-finding skills.
• Understanding of lift safety systems and their correct operation.
• Familiarity with CMMS or CAFM systems for recording faults, usage and maintenance activities. Training may be provided for candidates who have not previously used such a system.
• Good communication skills and the ability to work with specialist contractors and engineering teams.
• A calm, systematic approach when dealing with faults or emergencies.

Working hours and operational requirements

This position may involve shift work, standby duties and emergency callouts outside normal working hours.

The Lift Operator should therefore be prepared to respond when operational requirements demand it, including during live events when stage or theatrical elevators are being used.

The job may also require working in plant rooms, lift pits and other confined areas where applicable. Candidates should be physically fit and comfortable working in these environments.

Working with the engineering team

The Lift Operator will work closely with the Chief Engineer, specialist lift maintenance subcontractor and wider Facilities Management team.

The position is not intended to replace the specialist maintenance contractor. Instead, the operator provides daily monitoring, first-line response, accurate fault reporting and operational support while ensuring that specialist maintenance and compliance work can be carried out effectively.

Good communication is therefore essential. Faults need to be identified, recorded and escalated clearly so that the appropriate technical response can be arranged.

This position would suit a technically minded facilities or engineering professional who has practical experience around lift systems and understands the importance of safety procedures.

Candidates should be comfortable with routine equipment checks but also capable of responding appropriately when something goes wrong. Experience with passenger lifts or other vertical transportation systems will be particularly relevant.

The role may also suit someone who has worked as a lift operator, maintenance assistant, electrical or mechanical technician, or in a related facilities engineering environment, provided they have the required hands-on experience.
