Job Overview
PalmPay is hiring a full-time Credit Risk Manager in Lagos to lead its credit underwriting function for small and medium-sized enterprise loans. The position will oversee underwriting decisions, review complex credit applications and monitor portfolio quality in line with the company’s credit policies and risk appetite.
The manager will supervise the underwriting team and collaborate with the Risk, Field Verification, Collections and Sales functions to improve loan quality and reduce credit losses.

Key Responsibilities
Credit underwriting and decision-making
- Lead and supervise the Credit Underwriting team.
- Ensure that credit decisions are completed accurately and within the required timelines.
- Review and approve SME loan applications according to the company’s credit policies and risk framework.
- Evaluate complex credit proposals before decisions are made.
- Analyse applicants’ financial statements, cash flow and business performance.
- Ensure that underwriting decisions remain consistent with the organization’s stated risk appetite.
Portfolio monitoring and risk control
- Monitor the quality and performance of the SME loan portfolio.
- Identify emerging credit risks and recommend appropriate mitigation measures.
- Work with the Risk, Verification and Collections teams to minimize potential credit losses.
- Collaborate with relevant teams to improve loan quality and reduce default rates.
- Review portfolio information to identify issues that may require changes to underwriting practices.
Policy and process development
- Develop and implement credit underwriting standards.
- Contribute to the development and application of relevant credit policies.
- Review underwriting processes and recommend practical improvements.
- Promote consistent application of lending policies across the underwriting function.
- Help strengthen the quality, accuracy and efficiency of credit assessments.
Cross-functional collaboration
- Work closely with Field Verification, Collections, Sales and Risk teams.
- Coordinate with relevant stakeholders when reviewing SME loan applications.
- Share credit-risk observations that may support improvements in verification, collections and lending decisions.
- Maintain clear written reports and communication with internal stakeholders.
Qualifications and Experience
Applicants must have:
- A bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, Economics, Business Administration or a related field.
- Between five and eight years of experience in credit underwriting, credit risk management or SME lending.
- Previous professional experience in banking, fintech, digital lending or microfinance.
- A sound understanding of SME credit analysis.
- Knowledge of financial statement analysis and lending policies.
Professional certifications such as ACIB, ACA, ACCA, CFA, FRM or CRCMP will be considered an added advantage. Other relevant risk or credit certifications may also be accepted as an advantage.
