Job Overview

This role leads the captive power generation and energy management function at Dangote Industries Limited’s plant in Head Office – Lagos. The position is responsible for maintaining a reliable, cost-effective and efficient power supply for cement production while driving operational excellence, sustainability and compliance with Dangote standards.

The role covers captive power plants using coal or gas, Waste Heat Recovery (WHR) systems, maintenance and equipment reliability, energy performance, fuel and cost optimisation, health, safety and environmental compliance, projects, innovation, and team leadership. The operating environment is an industrial plant with 24/7 operations, including availability during plant shutdowns, start-ups and emergencies.

Qualification: Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering or Electrical Engineering; COREN registration in Nigeria or equivalent preferred; MBA or relevant postgraduate qualification is an advantage

About the Organization

Dangote Industries Limited operates a cement production environment supported by captive power generation, Waste Heat Recovery systems and large-scale continuous process operations. The role works across production, engineering, corporate energy functions, original equipment manufacturers, contractors and service providers.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee the operation of captive power plants, including coal- and gas-based systems, and Waste Heat Recovery systems.
  • Ensure uninterrupted power supply to kiln lines, grinding units and auxiliary systems.
  • Achieve optimal Plant Load Factor and generation efficiency.
  • Lead preventive, predictive and shutdown maintenance programmes.
  • Maintain high availability of boilers, turbines, generators and Balance of Plant systems.
  • Drive root cause analysis for breakdowns and implement corrective actions.
  • Optimise specific power consumption, measured in kWh per ton of cement.
  • Improve heat rate and thermal efficiency.
  • Lead plant-wide energy optimisation initiatives aligned with Dangote benchmarks.
  • Monitor energy dashboards and performance analytics.
  • Manage power generation costs covering fuel, operations and maintenance.
  • Optimise the fuel mix, including coal, LPFO, gas and alternative fuels where applicable.
  • Drive cost-per-kWh reduction strategies and support annual budgeting, forecasting and cost controls.
  • Champion Dangote’s Zero Harm safety culture.
  • Ensure compliance with Nigerian and African regulatory requirements and Dangote HSE policies.
  • Manage emissions, ash handling and environmental controls.
  • Lead safety audits, toolbox talks and incident investigations.
  • Lead power plant expansion and upgrade projects.
  • Support Waste Heat Recovery optimisation and carbon reduction initiatives.
  • Drive digital transformation through automation, predictive analytics and IoT monitoring.
  • Implement global best practices in energy management.
  • Build and lead a high-performance engineering and operations team.
  • Provide coaching, training and succession planning.
  • Collaborate with Production, including Kiln and Cement Mills, Central Engineering and Corporate Energy Teams.
  • Manage OEMs, contractors and service providers.

Requirements and Qualifications

Education

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering or Electrical Engineering.
  • COREN registration in Nigeria or an equivalent is preferred.
  • An MBA or relevant postgraduate qualification is an advantage.

Experience

  • 15–20 years of experience in power generation or cement manufacturing.
  • At least 5–8 years in a leadership role at HOD or GM level.
  • Strong experience with captive power plants.
  • Strong experience with Waste Heat Recovery systems, which is critical for Dangote plants.
  • Strong experience in large-scale continuous process industries.

Technical: Thermal power plant operations covering coal and gas turbines and boilers; Waste Heat Recovery technology and energy recovery systems; reliability-centred maintenance; and energy optimisation and benchmarking.
