If you’re an experienced nurse looking to contribute to humanitarian healthcare, Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) is recruiting a Nurse to support its medical programmes in Lagos.
This role offers the opportunity to provide high-quality patient care while working alongside multidisciplinary teams in one of the world’s most respected humanitarian medical organizations. Successful candidates will help deliver essential healthcare services, promote infection prevention, support emergency care, and contribute to improving patient outcomes.
What You’ll Be Responsible For
As part of the nursing team, your duties will include:
- Deliver nursing care according to medical prescriptions and established clinical protocols.
- Support doctors during consultations, ward rounds, and medical procedures.
- Ensure strict compliance with infection prevention, hygiene, and patient safety standards.
- Maintain patient confidentiality and uphold professional ethical standards.
- Assist patients with feeding, mobility, personal hygiene, and overall comfort where necessary.
- Monitor patients’ conditions and promptly report any deterioration or medical emergencies.
- Participate in patient admissions, follow-up care, and discharge processes.
- Complete patient records, registers, reports, and other clinical documentation accurately.
- Help manage medical supplies, medicines, and nursing equipment.
- Support the maintenance and proper use of biomedical equipment.
- Supervise and mentor nurse aides, cleaners, nutrition assistants, and other support staff.
- Participate in health education sessions for patients and their families.
Emergency and Triage Responsibilities
Depending on your assigned department, you may also:
- Conduct patient triage in emergency and outpatient settings.
- Identify critical cases requiring immediate medical attention.
- Provide first aid before referral to a physician.
- Assist during emergency resuscitation procedures when required.
- Monitor patients waiting for consultation and prioritize severe cases.
Department-Specific Responsibilities
The successful candidate will also:
- Sort newly admitted patients using MSF’s triage system.
- Monitor vulnerable patients for warning signs such as dehydration, respiratory distress, severe fever, malnutrition, convulsions, or reduced consciousness.
- Provide routine nursing care for therapeutic feeding programmes.
- Support accurate data collection through proper completion of clinical registers.
- Follow MSF infection prevention guidelines, including correct medical waste disposal procedures.
- Participate in departmental meetings and mandatory training sessions.
Minimum Requirements
Applicants should have:
- A Bachelor of Nursing Science or Diploma in Nursing.
- A valid nursing licence.
- At least two years of professional nursing experience, preferably with an NGO, humanitarian organization, private hospital, or similar healthcare facility.
- Experience supervising or mentoring other healthcare workers.
- Good communication skills in English.
- Knowledge of Hausa will be an added advantage.
- Familiarity with malnutrition management protocols is desirable.
