Help Capture the Impact of Humanitarian Programmes Through Strategic Storytelling
Strong evidence and meaningful stories play an important role in improving humanitarian programmes. Mercy Corps is recruiting a Communication and Learning Consultant to document the implementation and results of an integrated WASH and Nutrition project across Borno and Yobe States.
This consultancy is suited to professionals with experience in development communication, visual storytelling, research, and knowledge management who can transform field experiences into high-quality learning products that support future humanitarian programming.

About the Project
The consultancy supports the NHF-funded Integrated Lifesaving WASH and Nutrition Response operating in Borno and Yobe States.
The programme aims to improve nutrition outcomes while reducing water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) risks among more than 153,000 vulnerable people through an integrated humanitarian response.
The consultant will document project implementation, gather visual evidence, and produce communication materials that capture lessons learned, programme achievements, and practical insights for future interventions.
Purpose of the Consultancy
The selected consultant will work closely with Mercy Corps’ Communications, Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning (MEL), and Programme teams to create visual and written learning products throughout the project lifecycle.
The assignment will focus on documenting how activities are implemented, highlighting effective approaches, identifying operational challenges, and presenting findings through engaging multimedia content.
The consultancy will be delivered in three stages:
- Pre-production planning
- Field documentation and data collection
- Post-production, editing, and final delivery
Key Responsibilities
The consultant will contribute to the project by:
Planning and Preparation
- Review project reports, proposals, monitoring data, and implementation documents.
- Develop a detailed documentation plan with Mercy Corps teams.
- Coordinate with project stakeholders before field activities begin.
Field Documentation
Responsibilities during fieldwork include:
- Recording programme implementation activities.
- Capturing interviews with staff, partners, and community members.
- Producing visual stories that demonstrate project impact.
- Documenting community engagement and accountability activities.
- Recording contextual footage that reflects programme environments.
Content Development
The consultant will also:
- Edit documentary and short-form videos.
- Process and organize photographs.
- Produce learning-focused visual stories.
- Develop narrative content based on field evidence.
- Integrate programme learning into communication products.
Expected Deliverables
At the end of the consultancy, the successful consultant will submit:
Photography
- 50–100 professionally edited, high-resolution photographs with captions.
Video Production
- One documentary video (15–20 minutes).
- Six to nine thematic videos (1–3 minutes each).
Learning Products
- Three to five infographic learning briefs.
- Narrative summaries highlighting key lessons and programme achievements.
Documentation
- Organized raw photo and video files.
- Metadata and file index.
- Signed participant consent forms.
- Summary of major stories and learning themes.
Who Should Apply?
Applicants should possess at least a Bachelor’s degree in one of the following fields:
- Communications
- Development Studies
- Social Sciences
- Economics
- Or another related discipline.
Experience and Skills
Mercy Corps is looking for candidates who can demonstrate:
- Three to five years of professional experience in learning documentation, development communication, research, or knowledge management.
- Experience producing videos, reports, learning briefs, and communication materials for humanitarian or development programmes.
- Previous work with international NGOs, donor-funded projects, or multi-sector programmes.
- Strong qualitative research and analytical skills.
- Experience conducting interviews, desk reviews, focus group discussions, or stakeholder consultations.
- The ability to transform technical information into clear, engaging communication products.
- Knowledge of gender inclusion, conflict sensitivity, and ethical documentation practices.
- Excellent written and spoken English.
- Knowledge of Hausa or other local languages will be an added advantage.
Consultancy Duration
The consultancy will run for approximately 30 days, from 15 July 2026 to 15 August 2026, working closely with Mercy Corps’ Communications, MEL, and Programme teams.
