Support Child Protection and Reintegration Efforts with UNICEF Nigeria

UNICEF is seeking an experienced Child Protection Reintegration & CP Transition International Consultant to support child protection coordination and reintegration programmes in northeast Nigeria. This nine-month consultancy is designed for professionals with extensive humanitarian experience who can strengthen government-led child protection systems while supporting children and women affected by armed conflict.

The assignment offers an opportunity to work alongside government institutions, humanitarian partners, and community stakeholders to improve protection services and promote sustainable reintegration.

Position Summary

The consultant will provide technical leadership to strengthen government-led child protection coordination while supporting programmes that prevent child recruitment by armed groups and facilitate the safe social and economic reintegration of affected children and women.

The assignment will also contribute to building sustainable national systems capable of delivering quality child protection services beyond emergency interventions.

Key Responsibilities

The successful consultant will:

  • Strengthen the capacity of the Ministry of Social Welfare to lead Child Protection Area of Responsibility (CP AoR) coordination mechanisms.
  • Support government-led technical working groups and child protection coordination platforms.
  • Provide technical guidance on child reintegration programmes for children affected by armed conflict.
  • Promote survivor-centred, gender-responsive, and inclusive child protection approaches.
  • Conduct assessments, gap analyses, and desk reviews to inform programme improvements.
  • Produce analytical reports and practical recommendations for stakeholders.
  • Support peacebuilding and community-based protection initiatives across northeast Nigeria.
  • Collaborate with government agencies, humanitarian organizations, and community partners.
  • Ensure reintegration activities align with UNICEF’s Core Commitments for Children in Humanitarian Action (CCCs) and Child Protection Minimum Standards.
  • Contribute to sustainable child protection systems through mentoring, institutional support, and capacity strengthening.

Required Qualifications

Applicants should possess:

  • A Master’s Degree in Child Protection, Social Work, International Development, Human Rights, or a closely related discipline.
  • Between 7 and 10 years of professional experience in child protection programming and coordination.
  • Demonstrated experience supporting the reintegration of children affected by armed conflict.
  • Experience working with government-led coordination mechanisms or inter-agency child protection groups.
  • Strong experience delivering capacity-building initiatives for government institutions.
  • Excellent analytical, assessment, report writing, and stakeholder engagement skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in complex humanitarian environments.
  • Excellent written and spoken English communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications

The following will strengthen an application:

  • Previous professional experience in Nigeria.
  • Prior consultancy or employment experience with UNICEF or other United Nations agencies.
  • Familiarity with humanitarian child protection standards, community-based protection approaches, and inclusive programming.
